The Math Behind It All

When people talk about doing the right thing as "moral," it almost escapes the whole beauty of the thing.

The beauty lies in the mathematical precision behind things — and that social life too is ruled by principles.

These principles are beautiful to ponder in their own right. Staring at them, written as simply and elegantly as possible, might be enough to trigger a sense of wonder in the particularly fluent in this domain.

But it's because they can anticipate what is far more within reach to all of us: watching and seeing these principles at play behind events we can recognise.

Once you see the math, you can no longer unsee it.

They say that math is discovered, not invented. These principles have always been there — written in the shifting sands of life, ruling things. They are not new.

However, it does not make it less beautiful to see them revealed, and to be able to contemplate them openly, consciously.

It is even more magical when one is able to use math in one's work every day — to do real things and watch it play out, sometimes to frustrating results, and other times to watch things be resolved through the application of these principles.

That is what I get to do.
